A FURTHER six men have been arrested in connection with a firearms incident bringing the total in custody to eight. 

Durham Police were called to Coronation Road, Wingate, at 6.20pm on Tuesday, where a 4x4 had driven through the front gates of a property and hit another vehicle which was parked on the driveway.

A fire was started and more damage was caused to other vehicles parked in the street.

A loud bang was also heard, which was believed to be a firearm being discharged. Two men were arrested shortly after the incident, while a further six were later detained. 

Detective Superintendent David Ashton, from Durham Constabulary, said: “Following our ongoing investigation into the incident, I can confirm that six local males have been arrested in connection.

“Officers are continuing to follow up a number of lines of inquiry and would like to reassure residents that this was a targeted incident and there is no threat to the wider community.

“I would like to appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area around the time this took place, to contact us on 101, quoting incident number 344 of November 21.”

A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We can confirm that we attended Coronation Street, in Wingate,

“We received a call at 18.20pm on Tuesday to attend Coronation Street, Wingate. A report was of a house and three cars involved.

“Three appliances attended and there were four breathing apparatus used and all persons were accounted for. The ambulance wasn’t required and the last pump left at 19.20pm.”
