THERE will be an enhanced police presence at a city’s Christmas festival aimed to ensure visitors are confident of their safety and security.

Organisers of the Durham Christmas Festival are working closely with Durham Constabulary during the four-day event, held from Friday December 1.

The Police Interceptor Team, who were exceptionally popular last year, will be back on Palace Green on the Saturday.

Colin Wilkes, managing director of Durham Markets which organises the event along with Durham University, said: “Visitors’ safety and confidence is of the utmost importance to us and for that reason we will have an enhanced police presence in the city centre throughout the festival.

“The event is always fun and festive, but with thousands visiting the city over the weekend, it’s essential that we have the right people in place to provide reassurance.”

Festival organisers have advised that visitors to the festival may be subject to spot checks of bags, and are asked not to bring either backpacks or suitcases when visiting the craft and gift marquee on Palace Green.

Sergeant Kay Howarth of Durham City Neighbourhood Policing team said: “It is a fantastic event and we are pleased to be part of it again this year.

“People may see armed and unarmed police officers around the city. They are there to provide a reassuring presence and not in response to a specific threat. Security measures are in place to protect you and keep you safe.

"We ask that everyone is patient and understands occasional spot checks of bags may be required."
