A FAMILY music festival is joining Give Back Friday – a counter to the “crazy consumerist trend” of Black Friday - by giving £10 from every ticket sold on Friday to a child mental health charity.

The organisers of three day The Deer Shed Festival, held near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, have pledged £10 from every adult ticket sold on Black Friday, November 24, to the Anna Freud child mental health charity.

They are joining the #GiveBackFriday social media campaign, in which businesses and individuals come up with things they can give to a good cause, as a counter to Black Friday sales.

In excess of £1bn is expected to be spent in 24 hours on Friday, November 24, as businesses unveil huge reductions on products ahead of Christmas. Last year shoppers in the UK spent £5.8bn on Black Friday sales over several days.

A spokesperson for the Deer Shed said they were aiming to restore “a bit of compassion to quite a crazy consumerist trend” by pledging £10 from every full adult weekend ticket sold on November 24.

Other GiveBackFriday ventures include a Give Back Friday auction of one of Ross Poldark’s tricorn hats worn by actor Aidan Turner, to raise money for the refugee charity LE Solidarity, while a number of businesses are pledging to donate a percentage of profits to charity on the day.

The Deer Shed festival runs from July 20 to July 22 at Baldersby Park just outside of Thirsk. There will be a music line-up announced throughout December through the festival’s online Christmas advent calendar.

Last year’s event featured The Divine Comedy, prize-winning poet Kate Tempest and golden indie rockers Teenage Fanclub. John Shuttleworth, Justin Moorhouse and Hal Cruttenden headlined the comedy bill, whilst Guardian columnist Owen Jones headlined the literary bill.

Next year’s festival will also feature 80 arts and science workshops, theatre shows, sporty activities, and a magical woodland area.
