POLICE have confirmed that a man was killed in a serious crash in North Yorkshire which prompted the closure of a main road.

The collision happened on the A168 shortly before 5.30am at Stump Cross near Boroughbridge and involved an HGV lorry and a black Skoda Fabia. 

The driver of the Skoda, a 38-year-old man from the Cleveland area, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The road has now fully re-opened.

The A168 was closed between the Boroughbridge roundabout and Marton-cum-Grafton while emergency crews attended the scene.

Police urged drivers to avoid the area.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Anyone who witnessed the collision, or who saw either of the vehicles prior to the collision, is asked to contact police."
