HUNDREDS of people turned out to give a cancer trust founder an emotional hero's welcome as he completed a 276-mile charity walk from London to his hometown in Spennymoor.

Mark Solan set off from the capital the day after he represented the region at the Pride of Britain Awards on Monday, October 30.

The 44-year-old, who has been crowned ITV Tyne Tees Fundraiser of the Year, was close to tears as he waved and stopped to talk to the scores of people who had lined Spennymoor's town centre streets in support on Saturday lunchtime.

"I need two new legs," he said. "But I would do it all again for these people. It is surreal, I was hoping a few people might turn up, but I wasn't expecting this.

"It has been incredible. It is starting to sink in what I have done. I am so honoured."

Mr Solan said there had been some good times and dark times along the way, with physios telling him on more than occasion that he should quit, but he said it was the thought of all the people the charity had helped that drove him to the finish.

"Obviously, I was disappointed I didn't win (the Pride of Britain Award)," he said. "I wanted to do it for all of these people. They have supported me throughout my whole journey. This is my home and I am honoured to be from here.

"I wanted to walk to the awards, but I didn't have enough time, so I decided I would walk home instead."

He was inspired to support cancer charities in memory of his mother and grandmother and went on to establish The Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust charity in Spennymoor, helping people affected by cancer.

His walk concluded at Spennymoor Town Hall where he was welcomed by the town's mayor, Councillor Ian Machin and youngsters from 1st Byers Green Scouts, before receiving a civic reception.

There was also a performance from members of the Joanne Banks Dancers as he reached the end of the route.

Many of those who turned out to cheer him on knew him personally, however, many were there having been inspired by Mr Solan through his charity work or visits to schools and community organisations.

Cllr Machin said: "I think what he has done is typical Mark. He will take the opportunity regardless of the consequences to himself.

"It is tremendous that he was nominated. We are all very proud of him. His charity has done a huge amount of good."

Cllr Machin presented Mr Solan with a £1,000 cheque for the charity from Spennymoor Town Council.
