Students at Teesside High School are aiming to raise £1,000 for Children in Need today.

Nursery, Prep, Senior and Sixth Form departments are coming together to celebrate a fantastic day of fundraising and have planned a range of activities designed to encourage staff, fellow pupils and families to give generously.

Pupils will be wearing spotty non-uniform, baking and selling cakes, collecting ‘the round pound’ – old and expired £1 coins – hosting a tug of war contest, encouraging volunteers to brave a dreaded leg wax and putting staff in the stocks for a ‘sponge the teacher’ competition. The School has also arranged a surprise visit from Pudsey the bear!

Sixth Form student Jon Sutton-Haigh has even pledged to shave his head should students be willing to donate £200 towards his personal goal.

He said: “The idea of shaving my head for Children in Need started as a joke by my classmate, but I agreed without really thinking!

“I wouldn’t do something on this scale if it wasn’t for such a worthy cause. Watching Children in Need is heart wrenching and this is a small sacrifice which will hopefully make a big difference.”

Kirsty Mackenzie, Deputy Head at Teesside High School, said: “Today’s fundraising activities will showcase the excellent charitable spirit of staff and pupils at Teesside High.

“As ever, our School community has gone above and beyond to support those less fortunate and enable a great charity like Children in Need to continue its outstanding work in both the UK and further afield.”

The Northern Echo:

Teesside High School siblings Theo, Seb and Florence Ellis came up with a fantastic idea to support Children in Need at home.

Sport-mad Theo, in Year 4, and Seb, in Year 2, decided to wear every item of football-themed clothing that they owned, and asked their family and friends to enter a competition to decide just how many shirts and shorts they had on.

Florence, in Nursery, supported her brothers by baking delicious cupcakes for the perfect prize.

The boys piled on 43 items of clothing, 24 football shirts for Theo and 19 pairs of shorts for Seb, and were delighted to raise £67! The winner of the competition was their cousin Joe, who also attends Teesside High School in Year 10.

Corporation Road Community Primary School, Darlington

AT Corporation Road Community Primary School, the theme of the day was to dress to express yourself.

The children had to wear, make or use things that they already had and were not allowed to go out and buy something just for this occasion.

"We had everything from already owned suits and fancy dress to some great home made outfits. These included, superheroes, ballerinas, sports people, artist, chefs and beavers," said teacher Steven Brack.

St John's CE Academy, Darlington

STAFF and children of St John's CE Academy got into the spirit of Children in Need day with a school assembly, with parents and grandparents joining in the fun.

The whole school community dressed up in support with prizes for the best outfits for dark mornings and evenings to promote, the aim being to highlight safe travel to school.

Olivia Liddle, aged nine, came up with her own initiative, making brightly coloured wristbands and bags to sell. Charlotte Cooper, also nine, brought in stationery items to sell.

The EYFS children made and decorated special Pudsey biscuits. To date more than £160 has been raised with more donations to come.
