SIX people have been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences after armed police were called to a Middlesbrough pub amid reports of a 'large scale disturbance'.

A man inside the Springfield Hotel on Borough Road was reported to be at risk from others, at about 8.30pm last night, Monday.

There was a large police response, with armed officers and dog units called out after reports some of the perpetrators had firearms.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: "Eight people (seven males and one woman) have been arrested in connection with an incident reported to police at the Springfield Hotel in Middlesbrough.

"Six of those arrested were arrested on suspicion of firearms offences and the other two were arrested on suspicion of public order offences.

"All remain in custody facing questioning."

She said inquiries were ongoing today.

Officers asked those in the pub to leave last night and armed response teams, along with the dogs, scoured the area to try to track down named individuals.

Police said there was no risk to the wider public.
