A CYCLIST who died after a crash with a car was aged 80.
The collision happened on the A177 at 9.20am on Friday morning, between the A1(M) and Mill Lane, at Shincliffe, near Durham.
Paramedics said the cyclist had suffered serious head injuries in the incident.
The road was closed both ways for several hours but reopened later.
The Great North Air Ambulance (GNAAS) was called to the scene.
A spokesman said after treatment at the scene the cyclist was flown to James Cook University Hospital within nine minutes in a critical condition.
"The blue Tesla Model S 90D and pedal cyclist were travelling south on the A177 when the collision occurred," said a spokesman for Durham Police.
