HUNDREDS of knitters have already contributed to a memorial project which aims to turn woollen Christmas trees into a real forest.

Last month, Angelina Maddison, co-ordinator of the Weardale Area Action Partnership, invited the public to take part in the Helen’s Forest project in memory of Helen Louise Hambleton, from Hamsterley, near Bishop Auckland. The mother-of-one was business manager at the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Partnership before her death from breast cancer in May.

The project encourages people to knit Christmas tree decorations which will be sold at Hamsterley Forest on November 25 and 26 and December 2 and 3. All money raised will be used to buy saplings to plant a forest in Ms Hambleton’s memory.

Hundreds of people have already taken part and there is still time to get involved.

Mrs Maddison said it had been wonderful to engage with so many “kind and creative people.”
