A PUB will reopen its doors in a County Durham town following a £750,000 refurbishment – bringing with it 25 new jobs.

The former Crosshill Hotel, in the centre of Sedgefield which closed last year, is currently undergoing a major overhaul ahead of its opening later this month.

Newly named, The Pickled Parson of Sedgefield, is hoped to become a hub for town life and owner Crown Alderney, which operates Newcastle’s Lane7 bowling alley and The Fox Hole pub at Piercebridge, is calling for would-be staff to fill a host of full and part-time roles across front of house as well as senior, back office positions.

Sabina Poonwassie, the newly-installed general manager, said: “We’re so thrilled to be opening in a town like Sedgefield that has such a strong sense of identity and community.

“We want to do our bit to help cement that. We want to be members that add a positive dimension to life in Sedgefield.

“We want to be so much more than just a great place to catch up with family and friends.”

The pub, named after a character in Sedgefield folklore, is set to offer food and drink, including breakfasts, coffees, cakes and late meals, and it will also convert additional space in the venue into bedrooms.

Owners say they also want to develop a varied programme of family-friendly events.

Ms Poonwassie, of Barnard Castle, added: “We have a wonderful village green outside our front door and we want to be able to host fun, inclusive community events and other family-friendly get-togethers on that space.

“This will only happen with the support of people in the town, so we’re open to ideas on what the people of Sedgefield want to see from The Pickled Parson.”

It is also hoped The Pickled Parson will help facilitate and assist with issues in the town, such as taking in parcel deliveries while people are at work or hosting community group meetings.
