MEDICAL services in Durham are aiming to do more to support young carers.

The Central Durham GP Federation (CDGPF) and North Durham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are working to find new ways of supporting young people who have to provide support for family members.

Brandon Lane Surgery, Chastleton Medical Group, Cheveley Park Medical Centre, Claypath and University Medical Group, Coxhoe Medical Group , The Medical Group and West Rainton Medical Group have all signed up to a charter and appointed Young Carers Champions to help identify the children affected and make sure they get the help they need.

Dr Neil O’Brien, a GP in Chester-le-Street and clinical chief officer of the CCG, said: “It is our pleasure and privilege to sign the County Durham Young Carers Charter with the GP practices within the CDGPF.

“Caring for a relative without recognition can be emotionally and physically challenging. It’s vital that GPs are aware young people are caring for someone so they can put in place the necessary support to help them.”

Awards were handed out to those surgeries taking part, at an event which included activities for young carers.
