VEHICLE owners in Newton Aycliffe are being urged to remain vigilant following a spate of thefts from cars.

Police in the town are reminding residents to lock cars and remove valuable items.

Inspector Sarah Honeyman, of Newton Aycliffe Police, said vehicle crimes had been an issue over the last six to seven weeks.

"The vast majority (of vehicles), if not all, have been left unsecure," added Insp Honeyman. "I want to put a plea out to people to check their vehicles, making sure they are locked and valuables are removed.

"People think they are locking them. We're not really getting many break-ins but it us making it easy for them (criminals)."

CCTV across the town has on some occasions captured offenders but Insp Honeyman due to them being "hooded up" and wearing hats, officers have been unable to identify them.

In some instances two people have been spotted carrying out the thefts.
