WORK to transform Darlington’s historic covered market is well under way.
Stalls have been torn down in the heart of the Victorian market as builders clear the way for a bright future.
The building is being transformed as part of Market Asset Management’s ambitious plans to revamp the much-loved market.
Eventually, it will boast extended opening hours, a glass frontage, public toilets, a food court and an events space for community use.
Alex Blackham, who runs a popular café in the market, says stallholders are feeling optimistic.
Mr Blackham believes the initial work will carve out a space at the heart of the market where visitors can relax and enjoy their surroundings.
He said: “Work has to begin somewhere and we’re all hoping it’s going to look really nice at Christmas. Hopefully we’ll end up with a great space for people to relax and for the community to come together.
“At the moment, most of us are just encouraged to see that work is underway.”
