DESPITE heavy rain battering the UK, some of it in the North-East and North Yorkshire, emergency services in the region were not called out to any flooding incidents last night.

Flash floods had struck in five communities near Scotch Corner, North Yorkshire, on Thursday night with Gilling West the worst hit village.

But today North Yorkshire, Durham and Cleveland fire services said they had not been called out to any significant flooding incidents on Friday night.

Other parts of the country were not so fortunate with more than 50 people having to be rescued by RAF helicopters.

The South and South West suffered the worst of the weather and many people were forced to spend the night in their cars on the M5 motorway.

During the worst of the weather, 141 flights were cancelled at Heathrow Airport and Tube stations in London were closed due to flooding.
