LEISURE centres in Durham City are to launch their biggest programme of events for the summer holidays.

The five city council-run centres are to host a series of events to keep children busy over the summer, starting on Monday and running until August 28.

The Schools Out programme, running at Abbey, Coxhoe, Deerness, Meadowfield and Sherburn leisure centres, ranges from football coaching courses to pamper days.

There will also be five away days including a behind the scenes tour of the Stadium of Light and a trip to an outdoor adventure centre in North Yorkshire, with treetop rope courses and zip slides.

There are skateboard and BMX competitions planned for Fridays throughout the holidays, starting on August 3, at Belmont Community Centre.

Following that, the events will be at Meadowfield Leisure Centre, on August 10, Abbey Leisure Centre, on August 17, with the finale at Coxhoe Leisure Centre ,on August 24.

Aimed at youngsters from eight to 16 is the Club DC summer camp. It will include a variety of organised actvities including kwik cricket, dance and arts and crafts.

Each leisure centre will host the camp for a week during the holidays, with a full day of activities for £2.50.

To take part in any of the activities, young people need to register at any one of the leisure centres, where they will receive a leisure card.
