CHILDREN from Darlington schools have been having their say on a £60,000 playground to be built in Eastbourne Park.

The final plan for the development has yet to be decided, but after consulting with youngsters from Dodmire Juniors, Heathfield and St John's schools, a decision is expected within two weeks.

Five plans were put before the youngsters and they were asked to choose their favourite design.

Local ward councillor and leader of Darlington Borough Council John Williams said: "They have expressed their opinions and it's only right that we the adults hear their voices.

"We are not the ones that are going to be using the equipment."

Lisa Kwok, project officer for Groundwork, said the children wanted a playground that offered a unique experience.

She added: "The children are our clients and they are the ones who will use the play equipment.

"It's crucial to get their ideas and give them a sense of ownership so it doesn't get vandalised."

Once the plans have been finalised, it is hoped the playground will be in place by the October half-term.

Police community support officer Jim Edwards welcomed the plans.

"There is a definite need for such a facility, especially for the younger teens," he said.
