AN HISTORIC race which attracts top contenders returns to a North-East course next week.
The Durham National Handicap Steeplechase will take place at Sedgefield Racecourse on Thursday, November 2, with organisers saying it is just as challenging as it was in 1955.
The class two race now boasts the highest prize fund of the season while the meeting will feature two class three races.
Jill Williamson, executive director, said “I am delighted to be part of the continuing growth and success this historic steeplechase is achieving. Long may we continue to attract young upcoming and successful horses to our track.” Last year the race welcomed Brian Ellison with Five in a Row and Jac The Legend, David Pipe with Shotavodka, Dr Richard Newland with returning champ Royale Knight and Charlie Longsdon with Ready Token. But it was Peter Bowen who took the 2017 Durham National title with Buachaill Alainn.
