A CAMPAIGN to get more children into reading has been hailed a success as more than 9,000 youngsters took part.

North Yorkshire County Council collaborated with The Reading Agency to run the challenge on the theme of ‘Animal Agents’.

Youngsters aged four to 11 pledged to read at least six library books over the school summer holidays, collecting rewards along the way.

More than 9,600 signed up and almost 8,000 children completed the challenge.

A total of 116 events were also held across the region attended by more than 1,700 children aimed at encouraging them to visit their library.

Activities ranged from pony riding at Colburn Community Library and a “detective school” at Ripon Library.
