THOUSANDS of purple crocus bulbs have been planted to highlight the worldwide fight against polio.

Members of Durham’s three Rotary Clubs - Durham, Bede and Elvet - joined forces to plant 5000 crocuses on the Rotary Way roundabout at Pity Me as part of Rotary International’s drive to eradicate polio across the world.

The three clubs are working together to promote Purple4Polio and raise funds to support outreach workers, medicines and services for those with polio.

David Jackson, from the Rotary Club of Durham, said: “We are very lucky to live in a country where the disease is no longer an issue due to an effective immunisation programme, yet in the developing world, there is still more to do.

“We aim to raise vital funds to help eradicate this disease once and for all”.

He added: “The fight goes on, but we are nearly there, and in our lifetime, we hope to see polio eradicated altogether.”
