RESIDENTS are being reminding about the importance of securing their valuables following an increase in burglaries and vehicle thefts in recent weeks.

The spate of thefts have occurred in Bishop Auckland and surrounding areas - specifically Cockton Hill and West Auckland.

Bishop Auckland Neighbourhood Inspector Andy Reeves said: “We have seen an increase in burglary and vehicle crime in recent weeks in the Cockton Hill and West Auckland areas.

“These, in the main, have been opportunist where property is left on display, vehicles are insecure or homes unlocked.

“I would encourage all residents to take extra precautions with their property and valuables. Double check you have locked your cars and homes.

“If any residents observe anyone acting suspiciously they should ring 999 in emergency or 101. If anyone has any information regarding those responsible they can contact 101 or Crime stoppers anonymously on 0800-555111. I want to reassure residents that police are actively investigating those responsible.”
