A MAN is fighting for his life and a woman has been left seriously injured after being attacked in the street.

Both were taken to hospital after being assaulted in the Grindon area of Sunderland last night.

It follows an incident in Geneva Road, which happened at around 10.50pm.

The 33-year-old man was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle after suffering serious head injuries and he remains in a critical condition,

The 29-year-old woman was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital where she remains in a serious condition.

A 41-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the assault and is currently in police custody.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses to the incident.

Detective Inspector Sean McGuigan said: “If anyone was in Geneva Road and saw what happened or has any information that can help with our enquiries we would urge them to get in contact us as that information may be crucial to our investigation.”
