A MAJOR trunk road will close overnight at weekends as part of an £800,000 Highways England resurfacing project.

Drivers will benefit from smoother journeys along a 1.5-mile section of the A66 between North Stainmore and Brough in Cumbria.

Overnight work on the westbound carriageway, between Hardhills and Augill junctions begins next Monday, and is expected to take about a month. Most of the work will be done using single lane closures but the full westbound carriageway will close on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights between 8pm and 6am to allow for reconstruction. Diversion signs will be in place, and drivers will need to use the A1 and A69 to get to the M6.

Single lane closures will be used with a 40mph speed limit operating around the clock.
