THOUSANDS of people stepped back in time to take part in a popular wartime weekend.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway event attracted crowds of people from across the UK to Pickering, who entered into the spirit of the event with iconic 1940s fashion and wartime uniforms.

There were vintage stalls in the town, jive dancing and a special 1940s dance night at The Black Swan.

Over the three-day, Railway in Wartime event, families boarded steam and heritage diesel trains to enjoy the war-themed entertainment.

Military re-enactors took to the stations and villages along the railway between Grosmont and Pickering. Home Guard demonstrations took place in Goathland, while Grosmont became RAF-themed with a replica Spitfire and plotting room.

Levisham was transformed into the German-occupied French village of Le Visham with re-enactment displays and Café Allée du Bois.

The event marked the 25th anniversary of the Railway in Wartime event. This year’s event this year saw the return of the military and civilian vehicle parades on the Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday a foot parade was led by the Yorkshire Corps of Drums and included all disciplines of the military, followed by an array of 1940s military vehicles. Sunday saw the return of the civilian vehicle parade with classic vehicles and period motorcycles.

The railway also launched its Dame Vera Lynn appeal over the wartime event, to restore 3672 Dame Vera Lynn to give future visitors a chance to experience the sight and sound of a genuine wartime locomotive.
