A CYCLIST was airlifted to hospital after crashing into a car.

Police are investigating the crash which happened yesterday morning on Green Dykes Lane, York, on the approach to the traffic light junction with Hull Road and Lawrence Street, just after 7pm.

It involved an 80-year-old man on a bicycle and a BMW 1 Series that was stationary in traffic waiting for the traffic lights to change.

It appears the man on the bicycle hit the rear of the BMW and fell off his bike and onto the road.

Paramedics gave him treatment at the scene before he was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary. He is in a serious but stable condition.

The scene was closed to traffic until 11.30pm while the collision investigation took place.
