THE road leading to a city centre development will be closed this weekend to allow a giant crane to be moved off the site.

Several cranes have been on the site of The Riverwalk, which is the former Gates shopping centre, in Durham, which is being rebuilt to include new restaurants, a cinema and housing, since January.

They are being removed this weekend, which will require the closure of Milburngate for safety reasons.

The road will be closed between North Road and Framwelgate Waterside from 1pm on Friday, October 13 to 1pm on Sunday, October 15.

The cranes have been used for the construction of the steel frame for new restaurants and an Odeon cinema, which will be next to Milburngate Bridge.

The new venues at the Riverwalk are due to open during the summer of 2018.

The scheme is so far set to include restaurants including Turtle Bay, Cosy Club and the Handmade Burger Co.

When complete, it will also include student accommodation as well as revamped retail units, all part of an open air centre.
