RESIDENTS are being asked what they want to see in their temporary library which will be in use while a new building is under construction.

Peterlee Library is being moved into the town’s leisure centre, with money from the sale of the old building being matched by £1 million from Durham County Council to develop a new library.

A consultation event will take place between 2pm and 7pm on Monday, October 9 in the Burnhope Way library to find out what facilities users would like to be included in the temporary replacement, due to open in January.

Further consultation events will take place on Saturday, November 11 from 9.30am to 12.30pm and Friday, December 8 from 10am to 5pm.

Work on the new library is due to be completed by Autumn 2018.

Cllr Joy Allen, Cabinet member for transformation, said: “Consultation is going very well so far and we have already listened to those who attended the first session and told us they wanted a temporary library facility within the town, something we were already considering.

“We are aware of issues around universal credit and the temporary library will provide the same number of computers that we had in the old library as well as the traditional book loan service.

“Anyone who wants to give their opinions on what they think is needed while the new library is being constructed should attend one of the three remaining sessions taking place over the coming months.”
