FROM T-Rex's "silly" arms to century-old fossils, dinosaurs were the talk of one County Durham primary school yesterday.

That's after Dr Stuart Jones, associate professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Durham University, visiting Ferryhill Station Primary School to give the children a lesson on the ancient creatures.

Year 3 pupils from Cleves Cross, Chilton and Dean Bank primary schools were also invited to share the event, after it was organised by Glenys Newby, of Approach Too - the not-for-profit aspiration-raising initiative.

Ms Newby said: "It's an inspirational event where Dr Jones brings science to life.

"It's nice for all the schools in Ferryhill and Chilton to come together and not only do they see somebody from Durham University and what's possible, but it builds that sense of community as well."

Dr Jones was accompanied by two Durham University undergraduate geology students to deliver the interactive presentation to more than 100 pupils who explored the different types of dinosaurs, when they lived and why they became extinct as well as trying to find out why T-Rex had such small arms.

The geologist said: "It's the first time we have done this and great to see them absorbed in the topic."
