SEVERAL people have been injured - one seriously - after motorbikes twice left the circuit during a race meeting in Scarborough today

Emergency services were called to the incidents at the Oliver’s Mount circuit, with many being treated in hospital.

The first happened at around 10.45am when a rider crashed into a group of spectators injuring six people - one seriously.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: “A number of spectators have been injured and taken to hospital, including one seriously injured.

“The rider of the motorcycle was treated at the scene.”

The second accident happened at around 1.45pm when a rider crashed through fencing, injuring two spectators.

Two air ambulances and three road ambulances were called to the circuit and the rider was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough.

The two spectators were taken to Scarborough Hospital.

Racing for the day was later cancelled and a statement issued by organisers said: “Today we have had two serious incidents involving a number of spectators.

"Our medical personnel, together with the marshals and officials of the club, local police, nhs, ambulance staff and helimeds have treated all the injured.

"In view of the seriousness of these incidents and our requirements to call on outside assistance to help with this treatment, we have reluctantly taken the advice of everyone concerned and have decided to cancel the rest of the meeting.

"We sincerely apologise to you all for taking this decision and hope you will understand our difficulties in this unprecedented situation."
