MORE than 20 seabirds, including guillemots, puffins, razorbills and gulls, have been found covered in oil along the region’s coastline.

The RSPCA said some of the birds, spotted between Amble and Redcar since Sunday, had died.

The source of the oily substance has not been identified. The rescued birds are being rehydrated and stabilised before treated at a specialist centre.

An RSPCA spokesman said: “The birds will be cleaned with fairy liquid which will hopefully remove the oil from the seabirds’ feathers, which will mean they can remain waterproofed when finally released.”
