A CYCLIST suffered broken legs in a crash with a wagon on a busy road this morning.

The collision happened in James Street, York, near the Morrisons supermarket, and the road was closed temporarily while emergency services dealt with the crash.

Police were called to the collision, which involved a female cyclist and a DAF wagon, shortly after 8am.

An air ambulance was scrambled to the scene.

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said: "Emergency services have been dealing with a serious collision on James Street in York which has left a female cyclist with fractured legs.

"The injured woman, who is aged in her 40s, was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Leeds General Infirmary by air ambulance."

North Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Group wrote on Twitter at 11.30am that the road had reopened.

Local diversions were put in place while police investigated the scene. Motorists were advised to avoid the area.

The collision caused heavy traffic to build up in the area.
