A GUIDED walk to celebrate the 192nd anniversary of the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway will take place in the region next week.

Volunteers from the Brusselton Incline Group will lead the walk, which sets off from Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon on Wednesday, September 27.

Jane Hackworth Young, the great great granddaughter of the railway’s first locomotive superintendent Timothy Hackworth will be among them. She is also the great great granddaughter of Robert Young, who was an engineman at Brusselton from 1827 to 1848.

The Stockton and Darlington Railway operated from 1825 to 1863 and was the world’s first public railway to use steam locomotives

The anniversary walk will depart from Locomotion Car Park A, on Redworth Road at 10.30am. Cars will then be shared to the Station Hotel at West Auckland and, at 11am, the group will walk towards, up and down Brusselton Incline, stopping at Broom Mill Farm Shop on the way.

Highlights along the route will include the newly restored Accommodation Bridge, and a chance to walk up to the Engineman’s House.

The walk will finish back at the car park, with the group then heading to Shildon, where they can continue to Locomotion to view Soho House, the historic buildings and the coal drops.

Walkers must wear sturdy footwear.
