THOUSANDS braved heavy rain and Vikings to enjoy a village fair at the weekend.

The Hurworth Country Fair, now in its seventh year, attracted large crowds with a variety of entertainment and family-friendly activities.

In between seeking shelter from intermittent downpours, those who attended enjoyed dance and pet shows, live wrestling, pig racing, horse displays and a performance from a dog agility team.

Viking hordes were also spotted around the site, with re-enactors demonstrating a range of historical skills.

Parish councillor Paul Walton said the event, which also featured fairground rides, stalls and a miniature railway, was a success.

He said: “It was an outstanding day and brilliant to see so many people turn up to the village.

“They weren’t even put off when it rained, everyone just hid under trees or found shelter somewhere.

“Everyone had a great time and there was a brilliant atmosphere throughout the day.”

Mr Walton added: “The proceeds from the fair are split between St Teresa’s Hospice and our village hall.

“It helps to keep the hall running and means there’s always a little pot there if the hall needs repairs or maintenance.

“It is vitally important that the fair is a success and we think that this year has been very successful.”
