COUNCILLORS have approved a major management shake-up at the North-East’s railway museum.

Durham County Council’s (DCC) Cabinet voted in favour of proposals to introduce new management arrangements at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum (NRM), in Shildon. This will see operational responsibility for the site transferred to a single management structure under The Science Museum Group (SMG), replacing the existing joint management with DCC.

Council employees will be transferred to SMG along with all land, buildings and structures. Meanwhile, Bishop Auckland MP Helen Goodman, who welcomed the changes, yesterday posted on Facebook following a meeting with the head of the NRM’s York headquarters, advertising a stakeholder meeting on September 28.

She said: “I emphasised the importance of the museum building, their links with the local community and with other local tourist sites like Auckland Castle. On September 28 they are having a stakeholder event and I hope local councillors will seize this opportunity to engage with the museum.”
