MORE than 70 young dancers will be able to get to competitions across the country after being awarded a grant from a social landlord.
Dawdon Welfare Disco Dancers has been awarded £500 from County Durham Housing Group to pay for members to travel to contests.
The 34-year-old club includes members aged from two to 25 years old who, as well as taking part in cometitions, give regular displays at community carnivals.
Dance group leader Janice Purdy said: “We meet to practice five times a week, it’s a great way for our young group to have fun, learn new skills and keep fit.
“It gives them something really positive to do with their spare time.
“Competing also gives the dancers something to aim for and builds their confidence, but it’s expensive and we’re always looking to raise funds to make it possible.”
Angela Stobbart, from County Durham Housing Groups, added: “The dancers clearly love what they do; it’s great to be able to support them and allow them to demonstrate their talents to audiences in all parts of the country.
