AS Hurricane Irma approached Florida, appeals were made by those in charge telling residents to leave to areas for places of greater safety.

As always with these things, such appeals are seen as a green light for the massed ranks of the media to race into the storm zone.

They then stand there in front of the cameras telling us it is raining. We can see that and we also see the reporters being buffeted by the wind and soaked by the rain.

Can’t this sort of thing be done by some of CCTV set up with the reporters in a warm and safe studio?

And, of course, naming these storms has only spurred them onto greater feats of destruction.
