A LEEK club in Teesdale is celebrating after hosting its “biggest and most successful” show to date.

There were record entries and visitors at the Cross Keys Leek Club Annual Show which took place on Saturday in Gainford, near Barnard Castle.

Club secretary John Challen said: “Interest in exhibiting is certainly on the rise and much interest is being shown in the area and also from afar.”

It was a pair of pot leeks measuring 193 cubic inches and grown by Mr Challen that caught the attention of judge Stewart Newton, of Ingleton.

He was named show champion while his produce scooped a host of trophies and titles including the largest pair of trench leeks.

Last year’s show winner Trevor Fox won the best single leek in show and most points in the vegetable section while club treasurer Dave Greenland won the most points in the flowers section and the most points overall in the show.

Mr Challen added: “A special mention goes to four novice members who were exhibiting for the first time.”

An auction took place after the show in aid of local charities.

The club’s AGM is on October 3 when applications for membership will be accepted. For details find the club on Facebook.
