A DERELICT care home could be transformed into new homes if plans are approved.
The applicant, Kevin O’Hare, believes converting South Church Nursing Home, near Bishop Auckland, into seven houses and five apartments will enhance its appearance and the vitality of the community.
A previously withdrawn application for a children’s home prompted concerns among some nearby residents about the possible future tenants. However, Mr O’Hare, a private entrepreneur who specialises in refurbishing former commercial properties, has assured residents his intention is to provide high quality housing at market price, which is likely to appeal to young professionals.
The care home, in Auckland Road, has been vacant for years and Mr O’Hare is seeking permission to change its use to residential. Changes to the external appearance of the existing building will be minimal, with the majority of windows to remain in their original positions.
Outside, a private amenity space will be created to the rear, while car parking and entrances will remain at the front and side.
In documents submitted with the application, Mr O’Hare’s agent said the building was at risk of falling into serious disrepair, adding: “Its neglected appearance is compounded by the temporary metal security fencing across the front drive entrance. Whilst the building is not of exceptional architectural design, it is begging to be restored and brought back into an economically viable use.”
