THE final of a cricket tournament aimed at getting more women and girls interested in the sport takes place at a County Durham club this weekend.

Sedgefield Cricket Club will play host to the last Ladies Day event in the Under 13 Ladies Taverners Soft Ball Cricket Tournament, which has been held across the country throughout summer.

Eight girls teams will compete at the event, which starts at 1pm on Sunday at the club, on Station Road.

Two Sedgefield teams have made it through to the finals, with local players Jess Weatherspoon and Emma Dickenson also selected to play at Under 13 county level.

Coach Stephen Gilmore said the sport is becoming more popular among girls aged four to 14 years old, adding: “Girls participation in cricket is increasing year on year and after the women’s success in this year’s Cricket World Cup it is hoped that tournaments such as this lead to further interest in the sport at a grassroots level.”

Stalls selling gifts and food will be at the free event, plus a bouncy slide for children, a late bar and music.
