A SCHOOLGIRL has shaved her head at Reeth Show in memory of one of her “closest friends” who died from a rare form of cancer.
Milly Wood-Weatherill, 14, from Fremington, near Reeth, set up a stand at the show where she managed to raise £2,000 in memory of classmate Gaby Alderson, who died in March this year.
Gaby, from South Otterington, near Northallerton, was diagnosed with MYCN-amplified neuroblastoma in September 2013.
Donation pages were set up with the aim of raising £500,000 for life-saving treatment.
The campaign by Gaby and her mother Vicky inspired scores of fundraising events across the region.
During the adult fell race, Milly was taken into the main show ring, where spectators looked on as she had her locks shorn.
The money will go to Martin House Children’s Hospice at Boston Spa which cared for Gaby during her illness.
Milly said: “She was one of my closest friends at school so I wanted to do something in her memory and raise some money.
“The show organisers were great to set up a stand for me and both my mum and dad supported me in the head shave.
“After doing this a few of us were thinking of doing the coast to coast challenge but that might not be a good idea as we aren’t the sportiest of groups.”
