HUNDREDS of runners made their way through medieval woodlands and past Roman ruins to complete one of the region’s picturesque races this weekend.
Forgoing a Bank Holiday lie-in, competitors of all ages gathered at the start-line in Bishop Auckland for the third annual Auckland Castle Trail Race and Fun Run.
More than 260 runners completed the challenging multi-terrain trail race course through the castle grounds, held in partnership with Auckland Castle Trust and Shildon Running and Athletics Club.
Gareth Shaw, of the Shildon club, said: “Both races are a fantastic opportunity to get into running, and enjoy the spectacular scenery Auckland Parkland and the surrounding area has to offer.”
Samuel Beckett came in first place, followed by Chris Callan in second place while Jon Marshall took third place.
Louise Talman was the fastest female runner, followed by Val Clarke and Kimberly Reeve in third place.
Twins Thomas and Joshua Wraith took first and second place respectively in the boys’ fun run, with Joseph Reeve in third.
Beth Wilson took first place in the girls’ race with Megan Hauxwell finishing in second place and Keira Pounder taking third.
