THE Yorkshire Dales has one of the darkest night skies in England and to celebrate a special in-depth astronomy workshop for novices is being staged in Bainbridge.

It will explain the wonder of the night sky, how to use telescopes and how to take pictures of the heavens using simple equipment.

Night owls will also search for sparkling star clusters, galaxies and potentially even see a comet - and, as the date coincides with the best meteor shower of the year, the Geminids, shooting stars may be seen.

“The first time I observed in the Dales I was blown over by the quality of the night sky, with the Milky Way arching overhead,” said organiser Richard Darn.

“There are lots of people who are intrigued by the stars, but also feel a bit lost in space. This is the event for them."

It is open to adults and youngsters over 12. It goes ahead whatever the weather and refreshments are included in the £16 cost. Equipment is provided, but people can bring their own telescopes and binoculars.

The event is on December 13 from 7pm to 10pm but places are limited so book in advance. Call 0775 367 0038, email richard@richarddarn.com, or reserve places at https://darkdales.eventbrite.co.uk
