Joséphine: The Woman of Fashion, Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, opens on Saturday, and runs until November 30

Joséphine Bowes (1825 - 1874) was a very fashionable Parisian woman. Sadly, her wardrobe does not survive, except for two bodices and a blouse, but her dress bills and her fashion magazines remain. 

A selection of these will be shown with her clothes and some of her jewellery. A beautiful lilac evening bodice is to displayed for the first time with a matching skirt designed by Luca Costigliolo, for which he has made the crinoline and petticoat.

The 148th Weardale Agricultural Show, St John’s Chapel, near Stanhope, on Saturday

A celebration of traditional rural life, along with livestock classess – including cattle, sheep, horses and ponies – visitors can enjoy falconry displays, horticulture and handicrafts, floral art, bale stacking competitions and cookery demonstrations.

There will also be running events, a dog competition, quoits and a farmers’ market.

Music lovers can enjoy performances by Stanhope Silver Band and the Kerry-Ann School of Dance.

Weardale Agriculture Society has organised lots of activities to keep youngsters entertained, with a children’s tent packed full of fun surprises. Children can also enter their favourite teddies in a cuddly top competition.

Gates open to exhibitors at 8am and the public at 9am. Entry is £6 for adults, £3 for children and free for society members.

Big Kid Circus, Echo Arena, Neasham Road, Darlington, on Saturday/Sunday

A new show, they introduce a funny new Clown La Loka, who joins our Singing Ring Mistress Olympia. From Cuba the show introduces the Revolution Troupe, with their amazing teeter board presentation, and an enchanting hair dangling routine.

Back with their breath taking Three Wheel of Death are the Moroccan Artistes, while duo Harley Quinn present an exquisite double aerial star routine.

Showing classics featuring Yorkshire casts or set in Yorkshire. Included is the Yorkshire Premier of the award winning God's Own Country.

Pilmoor Cottages, nr Helperby, gardens open to the public on Sunday, 12-5pm

A year round garden for rail enthusiasts and garden visitors. A ride on the 71/4' Gauge railway runs through 2 acres of gardens and gives you the opportunity to view the garden from a different perspective. 

The journey takes you across water, through a little woodland area, past flower filled borders, and through a tunnel behind the rockery and water cascade. 1½ acre wild flower meadow and pond.

  • Admission £3.50, children free. Home-made teas. 

Myths, Legends and Fairytales, The Witham, Barnard Castle, runs until September 9

A visual feast of an interactive exhibition designed to inspire the imaginations of visitors young and old alike.

This exhibition presents a fascinating insight into the work of artists from across the region whose work is inspired by local, national, and internationally celebrated myths, legends and fairytales. 

The exhibition has been designed to have an imaginative, interactive element that will entertain visitors of all ages at The Witham over the summer holidays encouraging reading, listening, and drawing.

On Tuesday to Saturday, 10-4pm, admission free.
