AUTISTIC pupil Scott Ward is celebrating a remarkable achievement in Maths after overcoming the odds.

Scott has Asperger’s syndrome and has attended Beaumont Hill Special Academy in Darlington since he was five.

However, thanks to the inclusion policy at the Education Village, Scott was able to access mainstream education for Maths and Sciences at Haughton Education Village.

He achieved a grade 9 in Maths, placing him in the top three per cent in the country. He also achieved three Bs in his Sciences.

Samantha Dawson, Faculty Head for Maths at Beaumont Hill, said: “When he first came to us, Scott had difficulty managing his emotions and behaviour but he overcame that and his achievements are unbelievable.”

Beaumont Hill Principal Caroline Green added: “Scott is a shining example of how inclusion like we have at the Education Village can work. It is a truly amazing achievement to get a 9 in Maths.”

Scott’s mum and dad, Steve and Ann, and his sister Hope were beaming with pride as Scott opened his results.

Steve said: “We are just blown away. We knew he was talented, especially at Maths, but this has surprised even us.”

Scott said: “It wasn’t easy at first but I’m really proud.”
