A WOMAN is preparing for a walk in memory of her late mother.

Anita Elgie, of Chester-le-Street, has been a regular in the Alzheimer Society’s Memory Walk since her mother Doreen Savage was diagnosed with dementia four years ago.

This year’s event will be especially poignant for her since her 81-year-old mother succumbed to the condition in January.

Mrs Elgie said: “I wouldn’t miss Memory Walk for the world but obviously this year’s event will be especially moving after losing mam”

This year’s North East Memory Walk will set off along a 7km coastal route from Bents Park, South Shields, on Saturday, October 7.

Anita, a school cleaner, said: “I miss mam like mad – we were very close.

“I don’t think you can really understand how dementia affects people and their families until you’ve experienced it first-hand.”

Anita’s bond with Doreen was so strong that she scattered her ashes at the base of a rose bush that now takes pride of place in her back yard.

I think she’d be very pleased to know I’ve kept up the tradition of taking part in Memory Walk as a tribute to her and that other family members will be joining me.”

Memory Walk Officer Rebecca Scott said: “This year’s flagship walk in the North East will be the biggest and most spectacular yet.

“It follows a stunning coastal route over 7km and there’s also a smaller walk covering 2km that is wheelchair accessible.

“All sorts of people take part in memory walk, including those living with dementia…and dogs are welcome too.

“It’s an opportunity for anyone touched by the condition to come together to remember or pay tribute to loved ones.”
