AN running and athletics club is searching for former members to get in touch so it can update club records.

The Darlington Harriers are compiling a list of all of their former athletes to come forward to bring the club’s history up to date.

The club is enjoying one of the most successful periods in its history, having celebrated its 125th anniversary last year.

Membership has increased to almost 400 and a record 200 senior and junior athletes took part in last weekend’s Darlington 10k, comfortably the biggest club representation in the event which attracted thousands of runners from across the region.

Club development officer Paul Cook said: “We’d particularly like to hear from former athletes who may hold some of our club records.

“We’ve been lucky enough to have some tremendous talents at Harriers over the years and our vice-chairman, Ian Barnes, is still setting the pace as an 82-year-old England and Great Britain international.”

Earlier this month, a joint team from Harriers and neighbours Chester-Le-Street won the Northern League Division 4E in only their second season. It’s the first time in 15 years that Harriers have entered a senior track and field squad in regional competition.

The Harriers have had three Olympians – from former world mile record holder George Butterfield at London 1908 to RW Hawley competing in London 1948 and Joyce Grieveson taking to the track in Tokyo in 1964 and was also a 400m silver medalist at the 1962 European Championships.

Last year, the club purchased the winning athlete’s extensive medal collection from a collector to display at their training headquarters.

More recently in 2012, Lewis Moses was national indoor 1500m champion.

The club caters for athletes who compete across all age ranges and from beginners to the most experienced runners.

And members from all age ranges compete in track, field and cross country events throughout the year across the region.
