IT was a colourful start to the Billingham International Folklore Festival as the Parade of Nations kickstarted the weeklong celebration.
With performers from across the country taking part in the festival, the streets of the town were packed with international dancers from diverse countries including Colombia, Chile, Tahiti, Chinese Taipei, Hungary, New Zealand as well as homegrown talent.
Organisers have secured £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for the project – Billingham World Explorers.
The project, which focuses on celebrating 250th anniversary of Captain Samuel Wallis discovering of the island in 1767, features direct links to Captain James Cook, who was born in Marton.
For information about all the events taking place as part of the festival, which runs until Saturday, August 19, visit www.billinghamfestival.co.uk where you can find times and ticketing details.
