A 27-YEAR-OLD man has been remanded in custody in connection with an attack which has left a woman fighting for her life in hospital.

Dean Young, of Victoria Road, Darlington, appeared at Peterlee Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He entered no pleas and he will next appear at Teesside Crown Court on September 8.

The charge relates to a domestic incident which took place in the subway at Bondgate roundabout in Darlington town centre at around 2.26am on Thursday morning.

A woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries following the assault, where she remains in a stable condition.

A member of the public is believed to have called emergency services after hearing a woman screaming, and police arrived on the scene to find her seriously injured in the underpass.

The Northern Echo understands she is in an induced coma in an intensive care unit at a North-East hospital.

Parts of the area were cordoned off while officers carried out their investigation. Others prevented people entering the underpass at all entrances.

Durham Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information are asked to call 101 quoting ref 036 of August 10.
