A WOMAN was last night fighting for her life in hospital after being attacked in an underpass in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Durham Police were called to the subway at Bondgate roundabout, close to Darlington town centre, at 2.26am after reports of a domestic incident.

It is believed a member of the public called the emergency services after hearing a woman screaming, and when police officers arrived they found a woman with serious injuries.

She remains in hospital where she is being treated for what are being described by police officers as “life-threatening injuries”.

The Northern Echo understands she is in an induced coma in an intensive care unit at a North-East hospital.

The area where the attack happened was cordoned off for a number of hours while officers launched an investigation. The underpass was closed to the public.

A police spokeswoman said: “A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of (causing) grievous bodily harm with intent.”

Durham Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information is asked to call the non-emergency telephone number, 101, quoting incident reference 036 of August 10.
