THE Gala Theatre is set for an exciting few months as new events are announced over autumn.

A highlight of the packed theatre schedule will include a one man show Wisdom of a Fool celebrating the life of Norman Wisdom.

The Gala is also putting something on for football fans with stories about Sunderland AFC history on Saturday, 9 September. ‘Cornered’ a play by Look North’s Jeff Brown about the 1985 cup final followed by ‘Wise Men Say’ a comedy following the journey on the move from Roker Park to the Stadium of Light.

Cricket fans will also be entertained as commentator Henry Blofeld gives a special talk after recently announcing his retirement from Test Match Special after 45 years. Henry will also by joined by Graeme Swann, England’s greatest ever spin bowler to talk all things cricket.

The Gala will see London Classic Theatre Company bring Noel Cowards popular comedy Private Lives to the stage. Tickets for the opening night or mat nee performances will cost £10 if booked before August 4.

Robin Byers, Durham County Council’s service manager for The Gala Theatre, said: “Autumn is the Gala’s busiest season and as well as a jam-packed programme of our own, we are really proud to be playing host to key festivals.”

Other highlights in September include musical performances from four time Brit Classical Award Winner Russel Watson accompanied by a local choir performing songs from his new album.

Continuing with the music theme the theatre also have a boutique music festival lined up with The Laundrette Sessions featuring The Blockheads and Sunderland’s Martin Longstaff.

Comedians will also make their way to entertain audiences with famous faces including Jason Byrne and Simon Amstell.

One for all the family to see is pantomime ‘Robinson Crusoe’ a tale of friends on a quest to find adventure written and directed by Neil Armstrong and Paul Hartley.

The show will run from November 23 until January 6, with accessible performances for those with autism on December 14 and a BSL interpreted performance on December 10.

The Gala will also host a brand new Christmas Show this year ‘Mrs Claus’ Kitchen’ a magical show for under-five’s featuring puppetry, music and live performances running form December 4 – 30.
