A SUICIDE prevention strategy set up by a bereaved mother is launching a new campaign encouraging people to share their feelings.

The Great Lumley-based If U Care Share Foundation today launches registration for its life-saving Inside Out campaign, which they hope will reach more than one million people through social media.

The charity was set up by Shirley Smith with her husband Dean after their son Daniel Hare took his own life at the age of 19.

She said: “We need to encourage people to talk to start making a difference”.

Her popular son had no previous history of mental health problems or outward signs of his intentions and the family say that to this day they remain devastated by their loss and no nearer to understanding his choice of action on that day.

The Inside Out campaign, now in its fourth year, takes place in the run-up to Worldwide Suicide Prevention Day on September 10.

Supporters are asked to wear an item of clothing inside out and one of the charity’s “Ask Me Why” stickers and share a selfie on social media using #askmewhy.

A spokesman for the charity said: “Turning your clothes inside out is a fun way to encourage open and frank conversations about how we are feeling.

“The idea is simple but the effect on someone’s life could be profound.

“Suicide devastates communities and families throughout the North East and this campaign is trying to prevent that from happening”.

Since 2005, If U Care Share Foundation has supported over 940 people at risk of, or bereaved by suicide and yet this remains the leading cause of death in under 35 year olds in this country.

To register for the campaign, visit If U Care Share Foundation’s website via ifucareshare.co.uk/inside-out.

Posters, leaflets and stickers will then be sent out to you in order to raise awareness up to Worldwide Suicide Prevention Day on Sunday, September 10.
